the Douro

The Douro is the third longest river of the Iberian Peninsula, and drains a catchment area of 79,096 square km. It rises in the Sierra de Urbión, Spain, and flows westward for 895 km to meet the Atlantic at Porto, Portugal. The Douro defines a stretch of 113 km of the northwest border of Portugal with Spain. Here the river narrows and gets steeper, flowing among impressive granitoid cliffs. Along this stretch the river and banks are included in the Douro International Natural Park.
